So much of Telluride is defined by its architecture and history. Its visual character is one of the Town's main charms, for residents and visitors alike. The citizens of Telluride have worked hard to make the Town what it is today. Telluride is a National Historic Landmark District, the highest level of historic importance, because of its role in the history of the American West.
In 1973, the Town passed its first historic preservation ordinance for the purpose of protecting its historic buildings. The Town reviews alterations and additions to all buildings, historic and new, because changes to buildings can affect the character of the Town, and especially the integrity of the historic buildings.
The Town has adopted the Design Guidelines for Building in Telluride handbook, which provides design standards for all development projects. By taking care in the design of your additions and alterations, and carefully considering how it will affect the architectural character of your building as well as the Town, you will contribute to this long-standing tradition.
